Why Crafts in the Cathedral?
In medieval Europe, the Cathedral served as the center of not just religious life in a town, but often the civic and commercial life, too. Guilds met, degrees were bestowed, craftsmen sought employment, and commerce was conducted in the naves of many great Cathedrals. Wine merchants in 12th century Chartres and numerous other cities cleverly escaped local taxes by selling their wares from within the walls of the city’s Cathedral. Some Cathedrals even had different sections of their naves set aside for different types of merchants — textiles in one corner, food in another, etc. The Cathedral Church at St. John the Divine is honoring that tradition…..
